April 17th, 2016 | by Z. Gonzales

With over $2.7B worth in gross sales, 2009’s Avatar is still the reigning top grossing film of all time, and it looks like its director, James Cameron is planning to keep the film’s title by making it into a saga composed of five films.

Avatar coverThe filmmaker made the announcement a few days ago at the CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. According to Cameron, there will be four Avatar movies with the first one coming out in 2018 and will be followed by three more films in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

Cameron also said that they were initially planning for three sequels but found out that it was limiting and he would need to add one more title in order to tell the entire Avatar story.

He also added that each of the Avatar sequels will be able to stand on their own, but will together create a saga. He further mentions that he has been working with top screenwriters for the past couple of years to design the series going forward including the characters, the creatures, the environment and the new cultures.

What do you think? Will the new Avatar movies live up to the success of the original film?
