MWC 2016: Xiaomi Mi 5 and the Mi 4S

February 26th, 2016 | by Z. Gonzales

One of China’s largest smartphone makers has made waves this week in Barcelona at the annual Mobile World Congress and following their tradition, the company has announced a couple of smartphones that tries to compete with other flagship models without breaking the bank.

Xiaomi Mi 5

The company’s biggest announcement at the event was the Xiaomi Mi 5; and it looks and feels like it can really compete with other top guns like the LG G5 or the Samsung Galaxy S7.

For starters, the device is built with glass and metal, and incorporates a curved design that looks very similar to the Galaxy S7’s. The back of the device is covered by 3D glass which curves at the sides.

The phone’s 5.5-inch IPS display has Full HD resolution and comes with a 16-LED backlighting with Sunlight Display technology that promises contrast adjustment on a per-pixel level.

Power is supplied by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset with either 3GB or 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The phone is offered in different variants with the base 32GB model having a 1.8GHz processor while the mid-tier and Pro model getting 2.15GHz.

Xiaomi also didn’t skimp on the rest of the Mi 5’s specs. The camera department for instance has been treated handsomely with a 16MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture, 4-axis optical image stabilization, phase detection autofocus, deep trench isolation technology and 4K video recording. A 4MP UltraPixel camera lifted from the Mi Note is also present at the front.

Other notable features of the Mi 5 include a 3000mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0, 3x Carrier Aggregation, 4G+ or 4G Advanced connectivity, VoLTE, NFC, a physical Home button with a fingerprint reader and Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box (of course with the company’s MIUI 7 OS on top).

Though it wasn’t present at MWC, Xiaomi has another new phone that it launched this week – the Mi 4S.

The phone will likely sit between the Mi 4 and the Mi 5 and as such will have specs that lie between the two phones. Just like the Mi 5, this particular model will have a metal frame sandwiched between two layers of glass.

Xiaomi Mi 4S

The 5-inch display will have a Full HD resolution and will come with a Snapdragon 808 chip with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. There’s a 13MP camera at the back with dual-tone LED flash, a fingerprint sensor at the back and a 3260mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0.

In terms of connectivity, the Mi 4S is sporting 4G+ with VoLTE support, dual-SIM functionality and USB Type-C.

Xiaomi will start selling the Mi 4S for around $260 in a slew of colors including white, black, gold and pink.
